Interview with Yasmine Merei

In Syria, politics are dominated by men. Yasmine Merei is one of few women holding a leadership position in a political Syrian party.

In our interview series “One Constitution for all Syrians: Opinions, Thesis, Analyses” she discusses the political party system in Syria and describes her vision for the representation of women within this system. Is it feasible to impose a quota for women to increase their participation in politics? Is such a quota really needed? What are the role and image of women in the Syrian revolution?

Additionally, we discuss which state system Yasmine Merei imagines for Syria. Should the constitution stipulate the Arab identity of Syria or the religion of the state? And if there is a quota for women – how about a quota for certain ethnic or religious groups?
